Nearly 740 Kentuckians are currently on waiting lists for life-saving organ transplants. Some of these patients will die waiting. Hundreds more are waiting for life-enhancing cornea and tissue transplants.
While the number of donations and success rates have increased in recent years, so has medical science's ability to save more lives with organ transplantation, as well as the need for donated organs & tissues. A single organ and tissue donor can help up to 50 people in need.
If you wish to be considered a possible organ and tissue donor, the Trust For Life suggests taking the following steps:
- Place your name on the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry by visiting www.donatelifeky.org.
- Kentucky drivers may also enter their names on the registry when they renew their driver’s license at their Circuit Clerk's office.
- In addition, you may also indicate your willingness by signing the back of your Kentucky driver’s license or identification card and placing an "organ donor" sticker in the upper right-hand corner. Stickers are available at the driver's license counter or by contacting the Trust For Life, toll free 866-945-5433.
- Tell your family of your decision. This is probably the most important step as they will be consulted before donation will occur.
